You can't see heavy metals. You can't taste pesticide residues. But they end up in your food. If you're growing edibles, know your soil is safe — not just fertile.

Why it matters

The threats you
can't detect yourself

Healthy-looking soil can still pose serious food safety risks. The only way to know is to test.

Heavy Metals

Lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury can accumulate in vegetables and leafy greens. They're odourless, tasteless, and invisible — but pose serious long-term health risks, especially for children.

Unknown Land History

Rented land, reclaimed plots, and urban gardens carry the legacy of what came before. Testing is the only way to be certain — and to grow with genuine peace of mind.

What we test

Every parameter, explained

Two test groups — fertility and safety — combined into one comprehensive screen.

Safety Parameters
Pb
Lead
One of the most common soil contaminants. Found near painted structures, old roads, and industrial sites.
As
Arsenic
Occurs naturally and from pesticide use. Particularly dangerous in rice and root vegetable cultivation.
Cd
Cadmium
Accumulates in leafy greens and root vegetables. Associated with phosphate fertiliser use.
Hg
Mercury
Rare but extremely toxic. Tested as part of a complete heavy metals screen.
Cr
Chromium
Found near industrial sites and tanneries. Certain forms are highly carcinogenic.

Questions

Frequently asked

Everything you need to know before ordering your Food Safety Screen.

What heavy metals are tested and why?+
We test for five heavy metals: Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), and Chromium (Cr). These are the metals most commonly found in contaminated soils in Malaysia and are the ones most likely to be absorbed by edible plants. They are identified by international food safety bodies — including WHO and FAO — as the primary soil contaminants of concern for human health. All five are tested against recognised safe-limit thresholds, and your report will clearly indicate whether each reading falls within or above safe limits.
What happens if heavy metals are detected?+
First — the vast majority of soils, even in urban areas, return results within safe limits. If elevated levels are detected, your Serbajadi agronomist report will explain exactly which metal was detected, at what level, and what it means practically for your growing plans. The consultation call is specifically designed to address this: we'll discuss remediation options (such as raised beds with imported clean soil, pH management to reduce metal availability, or which crops are safer to grow). Detection is not the end — it's the beginning of a more informed approach.
How do pesticide residues get into soil?+
Pesticide and herbicide residues enter soil from direct application (farming, landscaping, weed control), spray drift from neighbouring land, or residues left behind from previous agricultural use. Many organochlorine and organophosphate compounds are highly persistent — they break down slowly and can remain in soil for years or even decades after the last application. This is why land history matters so much: even land that has been unused for years may carry residue from its previous life as an agricultural plot or maintained landscape.
How do I collect my soil sample?+
No special equipment is needed. Use a clean zip lock bag or any sealed container. Collect approximately 400g of soil — roughly a large double handful. Dig to 6–8 inches depth (the root zone), and fill the bag. That composite sample is what you send us. For heavy metal or pesticide screening, avoid mixing samples from very different parts of your land — if you're testing a specific area of concern, collect only from that zone. Full sampling instructions are included in your order confirmation email.
How long does it take?+
The full turnaround is 7–10 working days from the day we receive your sample at the lab. This is longer than a standard fertility test because pesticide residue and heavy metal analysis require more complex extraction and measurement processes. Once both PDF reports are ready, you'll receive them by email together with a booking link for your 30-minute video consultation. In our experience, most results are delivered closer to the 7-day end of the window.
